Darryl Morton is one of our most recent additions to the Driverly cap table. His extensive experience as a serial entrepreneur with three prior exits compelled the co-founder team to onboard Darryl as a board advisor too. We had a coffee chat with him to discuss this with him in more details.
Hi Darryl! Tell us a little about yourself.
I am a serial entrepreneur with 25+ years' experience of starting, running and selling businesses. I have successfully sold 3 businesses, but also had some failures, all of which has contributed to me learning many valuable lessons. I now work with ambitious start-ups (who wish to scale and exit) to help short-cut some of the challenges on the journey to a successful exit.
I have been on the founder-to-exit journey, often starting with nothing more than a blank sheet of paper. Working with some great people, I have managed to navigate my way through the various challenges and successfully sell three businesses, each larger than the previous one. Failure is such an important teacher. Over the years, I have made lots of mistakes, and also suffered a little bit of bad luck, but each failure has delivered value in the form of an important lesson.
You are one of Driverly’s new angel investors. Why did you decide to invest in Driverly?
I thought that the proposition was appealing; the fact that the team had generated so much interest in such a short space of time demonstrated good traction for an early stage business and showed a route to how the business could commercialise the product. The team had good, relevant experience and a network of contacts in the industry they were targeting. Ultimately, it was the strength of the team that persuaded me to get involved.
You have also joined Driverly’s advisory board. What does it entail, and how are you going to help Driverly achieve its ambitious goals?
My reason for wanting to the advisory board was to provide practical, hands-on experience (learnt from making mistakes myself, before finally succeeding) to the management team. It is great to be part of a wider team who bring a wealth of experience and expertise from different sectors. Regular meetings with the management team will allow us to keep a regular check on progress and to offer pragmatic advice and guidance to help the business achieve its aims.
What excites you most about the future of Driverly?
Like many businesses, insurance companies are also feeling the pinch, so the solutions offered by Driverly can help its customers to offer a more efficient service. In turn, this should also be good for the consumer, resulting in lower car insurance premiums. Using technology in a novel way to solve an age-old problem (the constant drive towards efficiency) is an exciting concept.
